The functionality of multimodal sensors is their ability to combine data
from several modalities to provide a comprehensive and coherent picture of the
environment. For instance, the system can recognize and distinguish between
different objects based on visual signals like shape and color when 3D LiDAR
and cameras are combined. This data fusion enhances object tracking and
identification for applications like pedestrian detection in autonomous
vehicles.
Redundancy is an advantage of integrating 3D LiDAR with multimodal sensors. Having
many sensor modalities is beneficial in safety-critical applications like
autonomous driving because it enables the system to operate and make decisions
even if one sensor fails or is restricted (for instance, by heavy rain or fog).
Besides, all sensors have advantages and disadvantages (different failure
modes) so when you see with one of them, other may be seeing better,, or not
